HP buys Palm for $1.2B, Could be the Start of Something Big

Standard

Big news in the mobile phone industry: HP has acquired Palm for $1.2 billion.

It’s no secret that Palm has been in the rut as of late despite the introduction of their new line of smartphones, the Palm Pre and Pixi, powered by their equally new webOS platform. HTC and Lenovo were previously rumored to be interested in Palm, but apparently, neither of the two could land the deal.

HP, meanwhile, also hasn’t improved on their current standing in the industry since they debuted their very first iPaq smartphone. With Palm’s expertise and experience and HP’s resources, this might be a match made in heaven. My guess is we’ll see the first Palm-powered HP handset by early next year.
